ZIP Tutorial

A ZIP file is a compressed folder that contains one or more files. Before you can use the files inside, the ZIP folder needs to be extracted (unzipped).

Most computers, including Windows and Mac, can open ZIP files without any additional software. Some mobile devices, like iPhones and iPads, may require an app.

Below are general instructions based on your device:

If you are using Windows, locate the ZIP file you downloaded. Right-click the file and select “Extract All.” Choose where you would like the files to be saved, then click “Extract.” A new folder will appear containing your files.

If you are using a Mac, simply double-click the ZIP file. It will automatically extract, and the files will appear in the same folder.

If you are using a Chromebook, double-click the ZIP file to open it. Then drag the files into another folder to extract and access them.

If you are using an iPhone or iPad, you may need a file extraction app. Once installed, download your file and open it using the app to extract the contents.

If you’re having trouble opening a ZIP file, you can also use a free online extractor by uploading your file to a trusted website and downloading the extracted contents.

If you receive an error message, it may be due to file location, file name length, or a corrupted download. Try moving the ZIP file to your desktop or downloads folder and extracting it again.

If you see a folder named “_MACOSX,” you can ignore or delete it. This folder is created during compression on Mac devices and is not needed for most uses.
